Has the Application of the Law Changed?

In defending obedience to Yahweh’s Torah, I run into some very interesting excuses or ‘dodges’ for those who don’t want to outright say, ‘It has been done away with.’

One such dodge I have heard a few times recently, particularly prevalent in the Reformed anniv arrangementcommunity, is, ‘But, Pete, the application has changed.’ This statement of seeming wisdom is then followed by some conclusion, whether stated or implied that says something like, ‘therefore we don’t have to do it anymore,’ or, ‘only the principles apply.’

So let’s take a look at this ‘application issue’ and see if it holds water.

In order to understand the burden of proof requirement for changing the law or its application, we need to be reminded Continue reading

The Sin of Israel and Modern Christendom

Yesterday we looked at Jeroboam and his intentional dividing of Israel from Judah.  He did so by developing and encouraging false worship.

Today, we want to read a passage from 1 Kings 17 that is exactly like reading today’s newspa.., er, Churchianity Today magazine.  I’ll put a visual of the passage below and only quote select verses.  I encourage you to read the whole passage and ponder the gravity and sheer rebellion, both then, and now.

First, let’s read a couple verses from the middle of the passage to remind us of what we studied yesterday.  Jeroboam was intentional in dividing Israel from Judah. Continue reading

The Dividing of Israel and Judah, Then and Now.

Last week, as I researched and read Scripture related to ‘stiffneckedness’ for a post, there were multiple connected trails that I chased.  Very interesting stuff…

I am not sure quite how I got into the passage leading to this post, however, the connection to ‘stiff necks’ is readily apparent.jeroboam ahias

We have discussed on various occasions the division of Israel and Judah, how they are often named ‘the House of Israel,’ and the ‘House of Judah’ in Scripture and how this has particular prophetic significance.  A GREAT primer, if the subject is new to you, is The Lost Sheep by 119 Ministries.  (They have a TON of terrific teachings…  all free!)

Now, we understand that the division was in the plan of Yahweh, though I think only in recent years have we begun to understand the hows and whys.  Today, as Yahweh reveals an understanding of things long hidden in Scripture, we find Him preparing Israel to be rejoined to Judah…  to the consternation of many, as this post will discuss. What does it mean to be ‘stiffnecked?’

Sometimes, I think the Father places thoughts in my head leading me on particular studies.  I will suddenly think of a term, word or concept and the Spirit will compel me to study it out.

One such thought that had the other day was, ‘what does it mean to be ‘stiff-necked?’  I immediately thought I had a pretty good idea, but the intent of the Spirit/Ruach was to read and confirm or alter my understanding.

Indeed, the study actually opened several neat doors that I will cover in the coming days.  All of it is intensely relevant for those who profess belief today!

Multiple passages confirmed what I thought I knew, but did so in a much clearer and precise way than I expected.  Continue reading

Visual Psalm 19:7-14 (and audio!)

Another ‘visual’ passage from the Psalms.

Enjoy.

Psalm 19 11The full passage follows…

Psalm 19b

The Torah is perfect and it ‘renews the mind.’ (Ro. 12:1-2)

The Torah is also sure, right, pure, clean, true, etc.

The Torah is everlasting! Ps. 119:160 among others.

Compared to honey and gold, synonyms elsewhere in Scripture for Torah.

“In keeping them is great reward.”  Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!  Scripture NEVER teaches that you are judged for KEEPING the Torah.  Only that you are judged for NOT keeping it.

Our Rock and Redeemer desires that our mouth and heart dwell on the Torah!  Deu. 6:4-9!!

This Psalm is attributed to King David, ‘a man after God’s own heart.’  Are those who diminish God’s word referred to as ‘men after God’s own heart,’ or are they destined for disaster because they have rejected the Torah? (Jeremiah 6:16-19)

Now, an audio treat…  Sons of Korah singing Psalm 19B

Shalom and blessings!

The VISUAL Psalm 119…

Yesterday’s post with some information about my ‘highlighting habit’ and a few pretty pictures made me think to share Psalm 119 from a different perspective.  Prior to understanding how much YAHWEH values HIS Torah, I found this Psalm to be incredibly boring.  It was very dry…  Not because that is how He wrote it, but because of how I viewed it!!

Ps 119 174Soon after He began to reveal how important HIS Torah is, I began to drink deeply of this Psalm and simply could not get enough.  Eventually, I took the time to highlight every synonym or word parallel of ‘torah’ so I could ‘see’ them all.  I used a pink highlighter to mark every instance of ‘law,’ ‘judgment,’ ‘statute,’ ‘ordinance,’ ‘precept,’ ‘commandment, etc…

Following are pics of this Psalm in my Bible.  Continue reading

‘Yeshua’ in the Tanak

Since being led on this ‘walk’ into Messianic Torah Obedience, I have been ‘developing’ the Pete translation of Scriptures.  I say that VERY much, tongue-in-cheek, but let me explain what I mean.

Ps 119 dbl

Early on, I began to find very interesting threads/verses when an English word was rightly seen in its Hebrew original.  I am always making highlights and notes in my NASB Study Bible, so, it was only natural to add these new tidbits.  As an example, I opened the concordance, looked up the word ‘torah,’ then proceeded to use a blue highlighter and circle every occurrence in the English text.  Torah is usually translated as ‘law,’ however, ‘teaching’ and ‘instruction’ are other words used.  The real value of having every instance circled is that as I read a passage, that word stands out and I can easily see multiple uses or synonyms set along side (way, voice, path, command, milk, honey, wine, etc). Evolution v. Intelligent Design and Shifting Paradigms

Recently, a friend in our fellowship loaned me a neat documentary titled, Unlocking the Mystery of Life.  The premise is a conversation with leading scientists who, as adherents to the Theory of Evolution, began to find alternate truth in their research.  Each relates parts of their journey from ‘evolutionist’ to a belief they collectively refer to as ‘intelligent design.’homersapien

The information presented in the video, as well as the excellent animation of molecular structures, etc, is fascinating, both as a general overview of the strong case for intelligent design and as an example of how new/deeper understanding can lead to a paradigm shift. Through the documentary we meet established, published and well respected scientists, some the world leaders in their field, who came to a point when they realized that the evidence they were seeing did not fit the evolutionary paradigm they were inculcated/indoctrinated with.  They had a choice… Continue reading

Guest post: Analogy of Father and Son with pic

I frequent a Messianic fellowship board that is something of a Facebook for Torah Observant believers in Yeshua.  Besides the fun conversations, there is much sharing of insight and Scriptural truth.  In the wake of a discussion about the Hebraic understanding of the relationship between Yahweh and Yeshua, Thomas Harrington had an interesting picture and commentary.

dbl onion picHe wrote (to Jim Staley):

: Thought you might appreciate the object lesson The Father gave me right after you started the Trinity on Trial series. Tonight I was reminded it of it. I bought what appeared to be a large single organic onion for a chickpea stew I wanted to make. As always, I sliced a bit off the top and bottom before unwrapping the outer skin of the onion, only to find  Continue reading

… then, He is NOT God!!

Have you ever noticed that there are dozens of places in Scripture where Yahweh says, in connection with some prophesied promise, ‘then you will know that I am Yahweh!’

Essentially, He is saying, ‘if I don’t do X, then I am NOT God.’

Seriously, He places His entire identity/reputation/name, etc., on the line!

Let’s look at a couple examples, then I want to challenge you, the reader, to add an example in the comments section.

We’ll start with two such verses, back-to-back in Ezekiel 37,

11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel; behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope has perished. We are [a]completely cut off.’ 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, Continue reading

Brick v Stone as a Building Material

A couple of days ago, I was delivering some metalwork to a customer in the upstate of South Carolina.  While in the area, I called a good friend and brother, Jeff, to see if we could meet-up for lunch.  What a blessed time of fellowship, open Bibles in the restaurant and animated discussion of the Word!

During our conversation he began talking about the difference in building with bricks and stones as an illustration in the context of Exodus 20:24-25.  Let’s read,

24 You shall make an altar of earth for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you. 25 If you make an altar of stone for Me, you shall not build it of cut stones, for if you wield your tool on it, you will profane it.

I could immediately identify with his illustration as I had written a related article almost a year ago.  His angle was slightly different, but the points are inextricably connected. Continue reading

R U N the 1%?

If Jesus came into your church, would you recognize Him?  While my guess is completely subjective, I would guess that fewer than 1% would recognize the Messiah, King of Israel, if He walked into your church building.

No, He likely won’t come dressed as a homeless guy, though we should receive the homeless with love and concern.

He won’t be in a long robe and probably won’t have longish hair.  He will have a beard.

In fact, 99% of the images and ideas we have of Him are wrong based on simple reading of Scripture.

You won’t know based on a ‘gut feeling.’  Your emotions will fail you EVERY time.

You MUST be able to tell based on facts that are verifiable.  Scars?  May or may not work…

How then will you KNOW without a shadow of a doubt who He is and that He is the REAL deal?

Scripture tells us exactly Continue reading

Yep. Sacrifice is an Ordinance.

Recently, we have seen that Abba Yahweh’s ordinances are everlasting.  The astute Bible student will counter with, “Really?  What about sacrifices?”

Okay, let’s talk about them!

First, you need to know that I believe the whole Bible is true and that just because we can’t explain or do not understand something does not mean we should redefine, dodge or alter Scripture.  Sacrifice is a challenging topic that makes Christendom, and not a few Messianics, squeamish, but Scripture gives some very clear pointers that we can look at and must take into account. In order to come to a correct understanding of the subject, we need to be sure to take all of Scripture into account.  In fact, the very verse discussed in the previously linked post says,

The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.

By assembling all the pieces, we can come to a proper perspective of sacrifice and how it, as an ordinance, is everlasting. Continue reading
