The (Not So) Quotable Church Fathers: Doctrines and Theologies

In the last week we have skimmed the surface of antisemitism in a number of ‘fathers’ of the Christian religion, including pre-Catholic, Roman Catholic and Protestant, in the (Not So) Quotable series.  Earlier in the series I promised a thumbnail sketch of some of the impact antisemitism has had on various Christian doctrines and theologies.

fruit-punch-in-punch-bowl_w490_h327Honestly, if we took a punchbowl and added even a drop of arsenic, the poison would quickly spread to affect every molecule in the bowl.  Who would want to taste, nevermind, drink heavily from the bowl?

In like manner, antisemitism is a poison that affects, often dramatically, every doctrine and theology in Christendom.  Following are a few obvious examples with a few possible effects.

Possibly the single most obvious errant theology that springs from antisemitism is Continue reading

Some Books I’ve Recently Read…

Here is just a short post with a few book recommendations/reviews/comments before I take the time to sit down and try to draw some connections between antisemitism and false doctrine and theology as we draw the (Not So) Quotable series to a close…  at least for a while.

I had heard from a number of sources that I needed to read Our Hands are Stained with Blood by Michael L. Brown, Ph.D.  It sat inStained my Amazon.com wishlist for months before I finally put it in the cart.  I think the reason it was there for so long was because I dreaded what I already knew I would find in the book…  And, I was right.

What an excellent, sobering, exceedingly well documented work detailing the abuses and persecutions of the Jews by the “church.”  Brown’s book is a fairly quick and easy read apart from the emotional heaviness of the subject matter.  His subject matter is very well researched and documented with hundreds of end notes and an extensive bibliography, while he manages to keep moving and not get bogged down in the thousands of horrific examples of ‘christian love.’

The (Not So) Quotable Church Fathers: Martin Luther

In the last two days we have considered some of the antisemitism in the early church fathers that deeply affected Roman Catholic theology and their views and treatment of the Jews.  Truly, there is so much and it runs so deeply that nazi-christian-theism-T-hZ8p2fI can only scratch the surface.  In the interest of moving forward at a reasonable pace, I would like to address Martin Luther, ‘father’ of the Protestant Reformation.

Many wrongly believe that by some miracle, the Roman Catholics who founded the Protestant Reformation were so enlightened in their new found truths, that they left the RCC’s antisemitism behind.  Such is not the case.  In fact, many of the ‘fathers’ of the Reformation were rabidly antisemitic.  Martin Luther, the ‘champion’ of the Reformation, set the dubious standard with his vile 65,000 word screed titled The Jews & Their Lies.  A straight line can be drawn from Martin Luther to the crematorium of Auschwitz!  In fact, Adolf Hitler used Martin Luther’s works to silence and woo the Lutheran church of Germany while simultaneously firing the hatred of Aryan Germans against not just Jews but many others he wanted to destroy.

The (Not So) Quotable Church Fathers: Various Early ‘fathers’

Yesterday we began a series considering the roots of antisemitism in the church. Indeed there are many examples of the vitriol we witnessed yesterday as propounded by John the-seventh-crusade-against-jerusalemChrysostom in his tirade, Against the Jews.  Before proceeding to some Reformation era quotes to demonstrate the antisemitism tracked into Protestantism by some of the Reformers, I’d like to cite a few other ‘church fathers’ as evidence that Chrysostom was not alone, but rather parroting a broader view.

Allan Gould, in his excellent anthology, What Did They Think of the Jews?, quotes ‘Saint’ Gregory of Nyssa (ca. 335-394 C.E.) as saying in his Homilies on the Resurrection,

Slayers of the Lord, murderers of the prophets, adversaries of God, haters of God, men who show contempt for the law, foes of grace, enemies of their father’s faith, advocates of the devil, brood of vipers, slanderers, scoffers, men whose minds are in darkness, leaven of the Pharisees, assembly of demons, sinners, wicked men, stoners, and haters of righteousness.

Further, Gould quotes ‘Saint’ Jerome (374-419 C.E.) as saying in Les Juifs dans L’Empire Romain, (p.312),

The Pig Who Died For Your Sins

Guest post by Travis W. Hughey ©2014

This subject will be offensive to many but please bear with me and hopefully you can understand what’s being said.

In John the 1st chapter we read the account of John the Baptizer (or so he’s popularly called) saying:

Jesus-is-the-lamb-of-God-slain-before-the-creation-of-the-world-300x187The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.   (John 1:29)

Anyone having sat in sunday school knows exactly what John is referring to. He’s speaking of the metaphor of the Pesach/Passover Lamb and it’s role in the redemption of the children of Israel from Egypt and Yahshua/Jesus being the one who’s blood will protect us from the wrath of Yehovah. It was the blood of this “Lamb” painted on the doorposts of the Israelite’s houses that protected them from Yehovah killing the firstborns of Egypt. They were instructed to secure a male lamb or kid goat four days prior to killing it the day just prior to the plague that killed every firstborn of Egypt at midnight. During this night they were given specific instructions on how to prepare it, how to eat it, and what to do with any leftovers. The instructions of Yehovah were very specific as were the instructions to do this throughout their generations as a never ending ordinance (observance).  You can read about it for yourself in Exodus the 12th chapter.

The (Not So) Quotable Church Fathers: John Chrysostom

Lately, I have been reading several books trying to understand and better come to grips with the roots of antisemitism in Christendom.  How did we ever strip the Jewishness of our Messiah and dress Him in Egyptian garb?

st-john-chrysostom-10At some point I will review the books, but suffice it to say, the poison of antisemitism and the attack against the roots of the faith begin early and with very influential church ‘fathers.’  One such highly regarded ‘father’ is John Chrysostom.  He may well be the vilest of the early offenders, but both the Eastern Orthodox and the Roman Catholic churches hold him in highest regard and thus embrace much of his teaching.  That which they do not embrace openly is surely read and influential in many circles.

Chrysostom, nicknamed the Golden Mouth, wrote and delivered a particularly inflammatory series of homilies (sermons) titled Against the Jews that are available even today.  He should have stuck to his series out of the Gospels or Epistles, as these eight antisemitic diatribes caused incalculable damage to relations between Christians and Jews and fueled innumerable pogroms against the Jews.  He needed his vile mouth to be washed out with soap!

Allan Gould collected and edited quotes Continue reading

Tales from the Bus: Fog and Faith

This morning was particularly foggy!  I’ve had several such mornings, but for whatever reason, today I felt much more vulnerable as I strained to seefoggy road past the end of the hood.  I found myself wishing for a nice bus route through town with all the attendant street lights and fairly well marked intersections.

Out in the country, there are multiple turns that are hard enough in the reduced visibility of darkness, but with the pressing fog, I felt myself desiring a really long red-tipped cane or a seeing-eye dog to hang out of my window….  to no avail.

At one place on my route, I have a very dark hard left-hand turn that drops off on a single paved track between heavy trees and a massive stone sign.  What I would do for some light offering security as I drop into the grade and hold my breath waiting for the headlights to sweep and catch up, confirming the pavement that I know is there, but can’t see.  (Who is the knucklehead that put the kibosh on Tucker’s invention of headlights that follow the steering wheel??  Okay, so it wasn’t entirely Tucker’s idea, but that is another story..)

And, as I make the turn with some trepidation, I think of ‘faith.’ Continue reading

‘Unity’ does not mean ‘Homogenous’

We have the luxury of having milk goats and therefore, fresh milk.  One of the interesting things about fresh milk is that the cream rises to the top.milk  Most know this, however, the dairy industry has virtually erased the examples from our refrigerators by taking some cream off the milk, then homogenizing the rest.

The process of homogenizing is a bit violent in that the milk is processed in such a manner that the fat globules in the remaining cream are broken up to such a degree that they will remain suspended in the milk rather than rise to the top.  As such, every tablespoon of milk, from top to bottom in a gallon will look exactly the same.  supposedly, consumers like this.

Me?  I know better.  I love skimming cream off of the top of a couple quarts of fresh milk for my coffee, or to enrichen some delicious dish.  Mashed potatoes with fresh cream…  (Now, that is ‘the bomb.’)

Recently, I’ve had several conversations concerning the divisions in the Hebraic movement.  There are so many divisions that it is hard to fathom Yeshua’s final prayer with the disciples.  He prayed for, among other things, unity!!  He prayed they (us) would be ‘one.’  Echad!

Yet, a cursory look at Christendom and we find little unity…  even less among the Hebraic.  The Adversary must be delighted!  (But, I digress.)

Does ‘unity’ mean ‘homogenous?’  Let’s consider the definitions and some Scripture.

ho·mo·ge·neous

Shabbat Message 3.22.14 Shemini and the ~את!

Excellent message today at Shabbat connecting Yeshua and the sacrifices of Leviticus 9 through the Alef-Tav. Our response should be exactly that of Leviticus 9:24, a mighty shout! Long, but well worth the time!

Pete Rambo's avatarDavar Chaim

What an excellent study we had this week as we looked at the placement of the Alef-Tavs, ~את , in Leviticus 9 and part of 10.  Indeed, we have such a wonderful Mashiach.

The music is at the end of this message as we enjoyed a terrific time of worship upon understanding what ‘ranan,’ רנו, at the end of 9:24, really means!  We pray this blesses you as you ‘see’ Messiah throughout the sacrifice in Leviticus 9.

***Mentioned in this message is a study tool worthy of your consideration: The Messianic Alef-Tav Scriptures.  Another tool used extensively is e-sword.

Shalom!
