Some thoughts on Psalm 78:1-10

So, I was reading again a passage that we used on Shabbat in a study of ‘chametz’ (leaven) and the uses of ‘unleavened’ in the Tanakh as well as the new Testament.  Among others, we discussed a verse, Matthew 13:33, where Yeshua uses leavening as a positive image.  On re-reading, the next two verses caught my eye.

33 He spoke another parable to them, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three [a]pecks of flour until it was all leavened.”

34 All these things Jesus Stormspoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

“I will open My mouth in parables;
I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

Suddenly I was curious, as we should always be, when I noticed the Tanakh quote.  Where does that come from?

Following Jesus Out of Christianity

Here is a video teaching sure to challenge almost every religious tradition you’ve ever accepted…  I do not agree with the presenter on everything, but we would agree on about 90+% of what he presents.  My thoughts on where we differ after the video.

This video was made a couple years ago and only recently posted on YouTube.  In the video he refers Continue reading

“Sin no more” …

Depending on the translation, there are several places where Yeshua says, ‘Sin no more.’

In the KJV, the two prominent examples are John 5:14 and John 8:11.Heart-of-Stone-225x300

14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

Other translations render the phrase as “stop sinning,” “leave your life of sin,”do not sin anymore,” etc.  (After all, the translators need a certain number of variations to justify a copyright and ensuing royalties…  but, I digress.)

Yeshua said, “sin no more.”  And this, in the two cited cases, after forgiving their sins.  Hmmm…

I recently concluded another one of those debate/discussions, this one via email, about the place of the Torah in the life of one who has placed their trust in Yeshua the Messiah.  Over and over the other side asserted that the believer is ‘free from the Torah,’ and ‘the Torah has no place in the life of the believer,” yet, here is Yeshua, forgiving sin and then saying, “go, and sin no more.” Continue reading

The Speeder. A Short Story.

Joseph should have seen it coming.  In fact, his surprise at the heavy penalty levied by the Judge only served to anger the Judge.

The judge had not issued a warning, or a fine.  No, this was far worse.  He had basically thrown 35_roadsignJoseph under the jail.  And for what?  Speeding?

As he sat behind bars beginning his long sentence, he pondered the situation.  He had lost his license, lost his freedom, lost his insurance, and because he couldn’t work, might even lose his house.  All because he was doing 52 in a 35 mph zone.  It seemed a bit steep, as traffic violations go.  He was only 17 over!  No big deal!

The problem, the Prosecutor had reminded the Judge, was that this was Joseph’s umpteenth time in front of the court for the same basic offenses.  As the Prosecutor had shuffled through a pile of paper, he had recounted more than eleven court appearances just in the last year, with a couple dozen in the previous five years.  Continue reading

Cool Image of Blood Moon Sequence

Saw this picture over on G+ and thought it beautiful. While we will need to wait a while to see what the significance of the Blood Moon Tetrad might be, it is exciting to see this very rare event.

What is truth?

I have always loved eschatology, the study of end times prophecies.  While doing so about 15 years ago, I read an excellent book, worthy of your time, that had a fantastic quote in the introductory chapter.  The principle explained has been a guiding principle in all of my Bible study ever since.  Here is the extended quote followed by some thoughts…

Scripture Never Contradicts Scripture

Our responsibility as students of the Word is to make every attempt to understand what is written in its most natural, dogmanormal, customary sense, being careful to first look at all other passages that deal with whatever particular issue we are studying.  Remember-and this is critical-we have not found truth until we find the single common denominator that makes all of the passages fit together.  Psalm 119:160 teaches us that “the sum of Thy word is truth.”  In other words, you don’t have truth until you have processed all the passages dealing with a particular subject and found the single solution that accommodates them all without contradiction!

I often explain it this way.  Assume you have six passages dealing with a particular topic.  Using the face-value hermeneutic, passages 1, 3, and 5 say one thing, while passages 2, 4, and 6 appear, on the surface, to be saying something quite different.  Those who prefer what 1, 3, and 5 have to say conclude that the common denominator that pulls these three passages together is 15, and on 15 they will stand and give their life, if necessary, sweeping passages 2, 4, and 6 under the rug, so to speak.  On the other hand, those who prefer what passages 2, 4, and 6 have to say come to the common denominator of 12, and they, like their counterparts, are willing to die for their position, irrespective of what the three other passages might have to say on the issue at hand.

Which answer is right?  12 or 15?  Actually, neither is right!  If you want truth, you cannot ignore any of the passage that deal with the same issue, no matter how contradictory they may seem.  However, if you refuse to be sidetracked by the contradiction and keep looking for the resolution, you will eventually find that all passages fit perfectly into one common denominator: 60.  Now you have correlation without contradiction.  Now you have truth!

Until the common denominator is found, you don’t have anything except confusion.  Plain and simple.  Until then, you must simply admit  you don’t know.  That’s the best answer to give when you’re not sure!  Then you keep looking for that single solution that makes all the passages come together perfectly, without contradiction.

The Auschwitz Escape… A review.

Joel C. Rosenburg, accomplished as an author who has heretofore specialized in fictional political-prophecy thrillers, has turned out another tAuschwitzEwinner, though this time he admits that with much trepidation he dared step onto the hallowed ground of Auschwitz with a work of historical fiction.

As we mentioned in a couple of our pieces tracing the roots of antisemitism in the church, Auschwitz, and the horrors perpetrated upon the Jews by a couple hundred other Nazi concentration camps, was a direct result of Christian antisemitism.  Rosenburg, in his thriller style, writes a very well researched fictional story based on actual accounts of an escape from Auschwitz.  He uses the storyline to begin a few years before WWII and trace the life of two characters who would eventually be bound together in Auschwitz and be tapped by the Resistance to get the truth out to the world.

While this is a massive topic in trying to explore the varying groups of sentiments as well as the multifaceted reactions of Jews and Christians to Hitler’s ‘final solution,’ Joel manages to touch on and in brief format, explore most angles.  Unfortunately, to really do them justice, he needed at least another 468 pages. Yeshua Keeping Torah in Gethsemane?

Why was Yeshua keeping watch in the Garden of Gethsemane?  I think He was keeping Torah!  Here’s why…

A friend was here for a couple days last week and we were discussing Pesach observance.  He explained that for the last 15 years he and his family have kept an all night vigil.  My curiosity piqued, I asked, “Why?  How did you arrive at that practice?”

Exodus 12:42!,” he exclaimed.  And, I reached for my Bible.

42 It is a night [a]to be observed for the Lord for having brought them out from the land of Egypt; this night is for the Lord, [b]to be observed [c]by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations.

Interestingly, the word ‘shimmur,’ here twice translated as ‘observed,’ is never used anywhere else in the Tanak.  It means ‘vigil.’  The night was to be observed as a vigil, keeping watch!   The Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Lexicon says, “1) night watch, watching, vigil.”
