Boys do not become men in a vacuum. Culturally, the expectation is that boys become men by virtue of age or osmosis, however such is not the case. Manhood requires intentionality.

It’s been more than a year since I wrote and published my position on a most controversial topic, one I had studied, reluctantly, for the four previous years. In fact, I really didn’t want to publish anything or go on record with a Biblical defense and evidence, but my hand was forced by twittering voices more interested in stirring pots than seeking truth.
The subject, Biblical polygamy, or more precisely, polygyny – a man having more than one wife – is indeed controversial, at least in traditional Western Christianity. Yet, inspite of the stigma and the controversy, the subject, even practice, is popping up all over and sneaking into the fabric and conversation of both Christian and Hebrew roots people across the planet.
The purpose of this article is not to present a Biblical case for or against. Frankly, an honest look at Scripture, particularly in the original languages, demonstrates that there is no case against it anywhere in Scripture. God never condemns it, but regulates and in cases requires polygyny. He endorses polygyny at points and refers to Himself on at least three occasions as having two brides. Honest exegesis leads to no reasonable conclusion against. The bibliography has multiple online papers and in print books clearly and articulately defending Biblical marriage.
Maybe, instead of knee-jerk condemnation, because the Biblical evidence for polygyny is rock solid, we would be better served to ask two questions: Why polygyny? Why now?

Two days ago, en-route to the Great Lakes Naval Station to visit our sailor son and deliver a much needed vehicle to him, my wife and I stopped on the northern border between Ohio and Indiana to visit dear friends Paul and Robin. After a nice dinner out, Paul was driving us via a scenic route back to our resting place when Kelly asked about seeing a few Amish houses.
Paul quickly obliged with a slight change in course and drove us through several farming communities that were beautifully arranged, well manicured, and visibly wealthy! We admired and rolled along discussing community and the obvious interconnectedness between the various businesses and farms.
I was struck by the two sizable sawmills with acres of trees piled waiting to be rough sawn and finished into lumber, furniture or other uses. Along with various other clues, we began a vigorous discussion about a few lessons we can learn from the Amish.
First, like so many others, we were drawn to drive through the communities in part because of their quaintness, but likely more because of their choice to be ‘set apart’ and communal. While they do not keep full Torah, they are intentional about many aspects that even the Messianic/Hebrew roots groups ignore to their detriment. As we talked, we called to mind various passages that were related. On such passage, stated in various places and in similar ways was the first part of Deuteronomy 28. I found gold mine, but have had to sort through some dross. Let me explain!
In recent days I have really been enjoying the refreshing (relatively) Biblically sound Hard Men Podcast by Eric Conn. As he rightly points out near the beginning of his episode titled Men Are Made For Dominion (5th from the bottom), there are very few Biblical voices teaching and exampling masculinity and both men and church are suffering.
Indeed, there are several secular voices teaching aspects of masculinity, but they lack THE major ingredient: Vision! But, I’m getting ahead of myself.
Conn’s episodes vary in length, but this is a very pithy 20 minute tear that I have listened to three times and likely will one more time before taking a group of fathers and sons hiking next month. Conn’s message is solid and needs to be shared with these men, but with a few very solid tweaks!

Without question, the world around us is burning and all of us are looking for, longing for, the Kingdom. We may each understand it a little differently, but all of us look for a Messianic Age or Millennial Kingdom. That Kingdom, we all agree, will operate according to the prophecy in Isaiah 2:2-5.
2 The word which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
2 Now it will come about that
In the last days
The mountain of the house of the Lord
Will be established as the chief of the mountains,
And will be raised above the hills;
And all the nations will stream to it.
3 And many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
To the house of the God of Jacob;
That He may teach us concerning His ways
And that we may walk in His paths.”
For the Torah will go forth from Zion
And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
4 And He will judge between the nations,
And will render decisions for many peoples;
And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not lift up sword against nation,
And never again will they learn war.5 Come, house of Jacob, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.

The prophecy says ‘He [will] teach us concerning His ways.. that we may walk in His paths.’

Last night I read an excellent and thought provoking article by friend, Brian Somers, on his new blog, Kol Yisrael Torah and Prophecy. Titled Thoughts on Grafting in the Wild Olive Branches, Somers brings together a number of threads related to the gathering of the ‘lost tribes’ and their grafting, along with Judah, to the Root.
But, that wasn’t the only article of interest on his new blog! An additional offer in his opening salvo is On Clothing and Modesty, a deeper study into what Scripture actually says regarding dress and modesty versus the western Christian ideas largely taken from Victorian and Puritan influences.
