Some big additions this evening…

Thanks to Ray Gardner, this week’s Torah Portion, Ekev, is posted on the Torah Portion page.

Also, all 27!! Psalm images from Bill Sanford of Aleph-Tav Scriptures have been added to the A-T Images page.  View and share them!!

Lastly, I am continuing to add to the How To: Messianic page.  It will be a ‘work in project’ for a while, but keep an eye on the changes and I hope it will be an easy/simple semi-comprehensive page for new folk coming into the Messianic.

And, closing with a sample from the A-T Images in Psalms that were added…

Who Ate Lunch with Abraham? A book review

The last week was terribly busy and I didn’t get to post much, but did manage to finish lunch with Abrahamreading one of the three books I am currently juggling.  Asher Intrater’s Who Ate Lunch with Abraham has been a most enjoyable read.  I should have expected such, considering the 38 reviews of the book on Amazon average 4.9 stars out of 5!!

My regular readers know that I have had a fascination with The Angel of the Lord appearances in Scripture.  As I came into the Messianic/Hebrew roots of the faith, I knew that the Messiah was Yeshua (Jesus), but I initially had trouble putting the pieces of Scripture together because I was suddenly seeing things in Scripture that did not square with my seminary training and Reformed Presbyterian inculcation.  So, I set out on a mission…

Yeshua said, “For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.”  (Jn 5:46)  If, indeed, Yeshua was right, Continue reading

‘from the midst of the fire…’

Originally published 8/11/14, but again brought to mind in my studies. Very important and interesting…

There have been a few thoughts from this week’s Parsha, Va’etchanan (and I pleaded), running through my head that I want to share in a rough format.  Hopefully, someone will find these nuggets useful to chew.

‘from the midst of the fire…’

Mountains 6This portion, Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11, encompasses some of the most important parts of Moshe’s message to the children of Israel as they prepare to enter the Land.  As I read, there were a few words and phrases that were of particular interest.  One such phrase, ‘from the midst of the fire,’ repeated at least eight times in chapters 4 & 5 was of particular interest!

Moshe is recounting the original giving of the Torah at Horeb/Sinai and to set the stage and remind them of the awesomeness of the Living God and the momentous event, he repeats this phrase multiple times.  See 4:12, 15, 33, 37; 5:4, 22, 24, & 26!!  Very interesting!

It immediately reminded me of Exodus 3 and the Angel of Yehovah appearing to Moshe in the burning bush and Yehovah speaking to Moshe from the fire.  In one sense, it made me think of Moshe’s private encounter with a voice from the flame and then Israel returning to the same mountain for a corporate encounter.  An interesting difference is that Moshe saw the Angel of Yehovah, where Israel “did not see any form, only a voice.”  (4:12, 15)

In the connection between the Angel of Yehovah and the giving of the Torah, something we have explored more than once on this blog, Was Jesus on Mt. Sinai? being one, it is interesting to note that where the Memra is not mentioned very often in the Targumim, He shows up five times in this same group of verses:  3:22; 4:24, 33; 5:5 & 25.  Notice the clear connections between the Memra [see brackets below] and the fire in these verses: Continue reading

The fullness of truth is not found in doctrinal statements, but in the foundation of all Scripture, the Torah.

Encouragement on the Wall

brothers

We have four boys who currently range in age from 13 to 19.  I am continually trying to teach them to care for each other, live lives for the King, be true to their ingrafting and be warriors.  When I saw this print in Israel six weeks ago, I almost immediately teared up as it so spoke to me concerning my own boys.

Well, today we picked it up from the frame shop and hung it prominently on a wall in our house to remind them daily of the things that are important.  May they grow closer together as they pursue the King and take a strong stand on behalf of Israel and Jerusalem!!

Westminster Confession Errors Pt.2

wcf w proofsIn our previous installment, we began considering some of the errors in the Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF), a document that defines much of the doctrine for numerous Reformed Presbyterian denominations.  You will recall my background and association with the WCF, and you also recall my admonition that not just the WCF contains error, but most all doctrinal systems.  As you read this, consider studying the tenets you were raised with, regardless of the denomination and see if very similar errors are not part of the doctrines you were inculcated with.

Now, let’s consider,

Chapter XXI

Of Religious Worship, and the Sabbath Day

I. The light of nature shows that there is a God, who has lordship and sovereignty over all, is good, and does good unto all, and is therefore to be feared, loved, praised, called upon, trusted in, and served, with all the heart, and with all the soul, and with all the might.[1] But the acceptable way of worshipping the true God is instituted by Himself, and so limited by His own revealed will, that He may not be worshipped according to the imaginations and devices of men, or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible representation, or any other way not prescribed in the holy Scripture.[2]

This chapter begins with a good paragraph and particularly an excellent bolded sentence that will become the undoing of the latter part of the chapter.  Be sure to read that sentence again as we will come back to it! Continue reading

What’s for dinner?

http://bible.com/111/lev.11.23.NIV

What most people eat has nothing to do with Scripture (Lev. 11), rather it has to do with the justifications that fit their own proclivities.  If you really think He made all food clean, why do you avoid so many things on the ‘unclean’ list?

Paul said, ‘Touch NOT the unclean thing… be not defiled in FLESH or spirit.’  Clearly, he still believed we can be physically defiled….

Westminster Confession Errors, Pt. 1

As a young boy and through my teen years, I was reared in a church that was part of the  Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) denomination.  The actual congregation my family was a part of, Lebanon Presbyterian Church, was founded in 1775 with Scots Irish roots that connected her well to a system of doctrine often termed ‘Reformed.’  Today, many Presbyterian denominations have drifted into gross liberalism, but the PCA has remained fairly ‘conservative’ as the descriptor goes.

With the rich history and proud heritage of the Scots Irish Presbyterians, I was taught inculcated with the belief that the best and only reasonable understanding of Scripture was based on the Westminster Confession of Faith, a doctrinal statement forged by the Assembly of Divines at Westminster between 1643 and 1647.  To question, or disagree with that document was tantamount to heresy.  It was/is regarded as THE proper distillation of Scripture and departure from it potentially endangered the soul.

In my early 30’s, the Father reigned in my Jonah trip through the military and the business world bringing me to seminary and eventually a pastoral position in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, another Scots Irish denomination with a long and storied history that adheres to the Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF).  My own denomination viewed my seminary credentials with some distrust, as they did for most any candidate who attended a seminary that was not ‘confessional.’  I attended a very conservative seminary that had students and professors from a very broad base of doctrinal positions, but the exposure to other thought processes was considered to be potentially problematic.  While my peers would disagree with my assessment, the questioning of belief structure is always more intense around pastoral candidates who ventured outside the chosen lines of ‘doctrinal purity.’

While I could go into much more detail with this explanation and give multiple examples, I offer this much to say,

Within Reformed denominations, Scripture is read through the filter of the Westminster Confession of Faith.  More precisely, the Westminster Confession of Faith is a man-made document that governs the Reformed understanding of Scripture and thereby is held as a judge over the Word of God.

The Guerrilla Messianic… **updated**

Some 25+ years ago when I was entering the military, the term ‘guerrilla’ was ‘all the Rangersrage.’  At the time, major enemies were not terrorists, though some terrorism was going on.  Primary enemies were Marxist type nations and most enemies we faced were insurgents in small countries.

Typical insurgent armies were under-manned, under-funded, and under-armed, therefore, they tended to resort to unorthodox means of getting their SF sniperpoint across.  Because larger nations and their armies were considerably less flexible and more staid in their doctrines, the insurgents, or guerrillas, often had great success, though under-advantaged in most every way.  The American military particularly aided and abetted guerrillas friendly to our cause, generally with Special Forces soldiers who specialized in teaching ‘subversive’ warfare that centered around ‘hearts and minds’ campaigns while delivering debilitating attacks on infrastructure. Puppets and Parrots Can Move Along….

So, you are not a puppet or a parrot?  Then I assume you are willing to wrestle with a few challenging questions….

pagan Christmas

  • Have you ever wondered why or how pagans, Wiccans, Buddhists, Hindus and virtually everyone else in the world can celebrate Christmas even though they have/desire no relation with the Messiah?
  • Have you ever stopped to saturnaliawonder why the ancient Greeks and Romans were celebrating a day of festivities complete with tree, ornaments, gifts and parties in late December more than 300 years before the Messiah was born?
  • Have you ever heard, or dared to look up the word ‘Saturnalia?’Buddha Christmas
  • Have you ever considered the fact that December 25th is regarded as the birthday of more than a dozen pagan gods?
  • Have you ever wondered what Yehovah meant when He said, “…beware that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?’ 31 You shall not behave thus toward the Lord your God,…”

To read/study a little more deeply: Christmas in July

Don’t be a parrot or a puppet.
