And I will put a heart of flesh in you….

How many times in this passage does Yehovah refer to heart, soul, etc?  Clearly, the Torah was to be written on our hearts from the very beginning!

The WHOLE HOUSE….

Several months ago, I had a trunk load of metalwork that got scrambled.  It looked so interesting that I took a few pictures before sorting it out.  The images remind me of dry bones….

Hermeneutics: How to Break the Law

I was pondering a little Christian theological conundrum this morning.

Oxygen Volume 11Every seminary student is taught sometime early in his Masters program how to interpret Scripture according to the rules of hermeneutics.

[As an aside, my son is over my shoulder asking about the origin of the word ‘hermeneutics.’  Well, I explain it comes from the Greek ‘messenger god’ Hermes to which he reminds me that Hermes was also the god of deception, thieves, the conductor of souls to the underworld, trickster, etc…  Hmmmm.  Seminarians ought to get a clue here, but, I digress.]

Continuing, hermeneutic rules have to do with how to interpret the text.  While the list of rules can vary depending on the teacher/text and denominational/religious division, almost always, on every list, near the top is a rule that says obscure or unclear passages must be interpreted by or through the lens of clear passages.  Further, all Scripture leads to harmony and therefore, a clear passage or two that contradicts an obscure or unclear interpretation should immediately override the misunderstood unclear passage.

So, I was pondering this hermeneutic rule, or shall we say, law and the multiple Christian doctrines that violate the law in order to Continue reading

Comment on Peter Vest’s Review of Give Me A Place Where I May Dwell

I really appreciate Al’s clarifications and look forward to the second edition of his book which no doubt will be improved with the incorporation of these thoughts. I highly recommend reading Peter’s critique followed by Al’s clarifications and response.

I just finished reading a book that is attempting to do for the Ephraimite Movement what Theodor Herzl’s book “Der Judenstaat” did for Zionism.  Some of what it says is good…other portions are very troubling indeed.

First, here’s the…

Hebraic Roots in Five minutes!!!

Hard to overcome a 1700 year old false paradigm in 5 minutes, but here is a great shot!

handmaiden4him's avatarOccasionally Profound

I had a friend who is from the Phillipines who is an evangelist. She was asking me “What do I tell people who say ‘I just want to study the Bible. I don’t need to know about Hebraic roots’?
It was a good question, and since she is from the Phillipines, I thought about people from other countries and how difficult it is to communicate anything if there are major cultural differences.
So i endeavor here to do this in five minutes. On your mark. Get set. Go.
We are going to look at Jesus. Jesus name in Hebrew is Yeshua. That’s what his mommy called Him…I got saved, born again, Spirit-Filled and empowered by the name of Jesus. It matters not to me what you call Him. But since I have a heart for the Jewish people, i will call Him Yeshua.
Yeshua was a RAbbi. We know that…

This week we consider part 2 of our mini series on the Apostle Paul.  After a challenging verse from Proverbs and a short review of the last 16 weeks, we continue establishing what Paul DID and his testimony of himself before we tackle some of his seemingly Torah negative statements.

Below is both video and audio so you can download and share.  Shalom!!

Why Individualism in Messianic Ministries is Hurting Us as a Movement and a QUESTION

Why Individualism in Messianic Ministries is Hurting Us as a Movement and a QUESTION

Not too long ago, there was a video put out by some Jewish Christians who apparently lived in Israel.  As is typical of Christians, they attacked Judaism by attacking the Rabbis.  The thing that bothered me most, even more than the unfair attacks, was the arrogance behind it.

And then a member of a well-known One Law ministry made some public comments that expressed approval for the awful video and I called this person out.

Oops.

The readership to this blog plummeted (it has since recovered).  The person in question quickly de-friended me on Facebook (which in Medieval times would be like slapping someone with a glove).

Now, I’m not bringing this up to cast any blame–I’m sure I deserve most of the blame, not being the most diplomatic person in the world.  I’m bringing this up because it highlights a faulty value system in our Messianic movement:

It seems that most ministries prize individualism (independence) over holism (interdependence).

I seem to recall that there was a scholar named Hofstede who wrote extensively about the differences between Eastern and Western culture.  I’m probably not going to get this exactly right but I believe he explained that there exists a continuum of values between the opposite poles of individualism and collectivism that might look something like this:

Individualist values:  self-sufficiency, independence, non-conformism, role aversion, individual decision making, independent living, self-guided

Collectivist values:  cooperation, interdependence, role acceptance, group decision making, group living, group-guided

The idea was that Western countries, because of affluence and modernism, place more value on the individualist values.  Be true to yourself, do what feels good, don’t listen to “authority”, let’s all promote equality because everyone is absolutely the same–let’s even have gender neutral bathrooms.  And in the Eastern countries, people actually listen to their elders, they are true to their group at the cost of personal desires.

The ideal is probably somewhere in the middle of the continuum,  (Continued on his blog, please discuss here or there…)

Book Review: Christianity Reconsidered

Book-Christianity Reconsidered200Perhaps, the very best book I have read in a long time is Warren Bowles’ Christianity Reconsidered.  As a ‘recovering pastor,’ I can completely relate to Warren’s journey from the pulpit to Truth!

In Christianity Reconsidered,  Warren not only relates his personal story and his pursuit of the fulness of Scripture, but, in very compassionate and understanding language, he exposes so many of the misconceptions and false doctrines inherited by Christendom from the early church fathers.

Jer 16:19-21 O Yehovah, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.  Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods?  Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is YEHOVAH.

My personal passion is apologetics for the burgeoning Messianic movement.  Like most who explore and begin to wrestle with some of the falsehoods Christendom inherited, I carried a good bit of anger for a while.  Now, largely being over that, I recognize how much of an impediment to clear witness it can be.
