Christendom: ‘Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow, IF…’

I’m sitting here watching the snow fall.  Masses of flakes bigger than golf balls are snowing2showering upon the surrounding fields.  Slowly the last vestiges of any remaining green or brown grass are disappearing under a relentless cascade.  Soon, all will be white!

Every time I see snow, particularly as it progressively covers a landscape, I am reminded of Isaiah 1.  Like many readers, I ‘hear’ the prophet’s words as he declares a message from Yahweh,

“Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says Yahweh,
“Though your sins are as scarlet,
They will be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They will be like wool.

As I re-read the passage in my Bible, I recall the times I’ve heard this passage misused by pastors, myself included, and ache.  Walk with me here as we consider the previously quoted verse within the larger context of Isaiah 1, and what Yahweh was really saying here.

Generally speaking, Christendom uses this passage as an outreach or evangelism passage.  They use it as a message for those who do not know the living and true God to ‘come let us reason together!’  While He does want to reason with us, lost included, that is not the purpose of this verse, and therefore, the misuse.

In context, this verse is a call to Israel to come be clean before Him.  It is a call of repentance to those who claim to be in covenant with Him.

Notice how clear this becomes when we look at multiple phrases leading up to verse 18.

For the Lord speaks,
Sons I have reared and brought up,
But they have revolted against Me.
“An ox knows its owner,
And a donkey its master’s manger,
But Israel does not know,
My people do not understand.

Alas, sinful nation,
People weighed down with iniquity,
[b]Offspring of evildoers,
Sons who act corruptly!
They have abandoned the Lord,
They have despised the Holy One of Israel,
They have turned away [c]from Him.

Where will you be stricken again,
As you continue in your rebellion?
The whole head is sick
And the whole heart is faint.
From the sole of the foot even to the head
There is nothing sound in it,
Only bruises, welts and raw wounds,
Not pressed out or bandaged,
Nor softened with oil.

And, phrases after the verse in question…

How the faithful city has become a harlot,
She who was full of justice!
Righteousness once lodged in her,
But now murderers.
22 Your silver has become dross,
Your drink diluted with water.
23 Your rulers are rebels
And companions of thieves;
Everyone loves a bribe
And chases after rewards.
They do not [h]defend the [i]orphan,
Nor does the widow’s plea come before them.

These are clearly ones who KNEW the Living God!  Yahweh desires to reason with His own who had rebelled, revolted, turned away…  These are not descriptors of heathens or pagans.  Pagans have not known God, but these have committed an abomination in that they have turned aside from the Way of Yahweh.

This is confirmed when we look farther into chapter one and see the result of coming and reasoning.  Notice they are ‘restored!’

“Then I will restore your judges as at the first,
And your counselors as at the beginning;
After that you will be called the city of righteousness,
A faithful city.”

27 Zion will be redeemed with justice
And her [k]repentant ones with righteousness.

It is very important that we understand, this message is to those who once knew the truth, but had wandered away. They had rebelled!

But, howHow had they rebelled?  What was it they had done that so angered Yahweh?  Can we learn something from this?

“What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me?”
Says the Lord.
“I [d]have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
And the fat of fed cattle;
And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats.
12 “When you come to appear before Me,
Who requires [e]of you this trampling of My courts?
13 “Bring your worthless offerings no longer,
Incense is an abomination to Me.
New moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies—
I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly.
14 “I hate your new moon festivals and your appointed feasts,
They have become a burden to Me;
I am weary of bearing them.
15 “So when you spread out your hands in prayer,
I will hide My eyes from you;
Yes, even though you multiply prayers,
I will not listen.
Your hands are [f]covered with blood.

16 “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight.
Cease to do evil,
17 Learn to do good;
Seek justice,
Reprove the ruthless,
[g]Defend the orphan,
Plead for the widow.

More than once I have heard seminary educated pastors with Masters Degrees state that the reason God was unhappy was because of the feasts and the sacrifices.  Incomprehensibly stupid!!  It is one of the many arguments used by Christendom to avoid obedience to the Torah that is so wrong that the seminary any citing pastor is from ought to retract their paper.  Worthless!

Without even going to the dozens and dozens of passages where Yahweh tells us that His Law, His Torah, is ‘righteous,’ ‘holy,’ ‘good,’ ‘life,’ ‘glorious,’ ‘treasure,’ ‘sweet,’ etc…, we can simply look at this passage and see the problem staring us in the face!  Syncretism!!  They were mixing the holy and the profane – bringing ‘iniquity’ into the Holy Courts of our God!

Israel’s sin is the exact same sin of modern Christendom!  Pagan ritual!  The profaning of HIS courts.  Eating swine, celebrating pagan holy days (Christmas/Easter/Lent), working on the Sabbath, etc…  ALL directly tied to paganism!  (Verses 28-29 exactly connect with why and upon who Judgment is meted out.  See Isaiah 66:16-17!!)

Some might counter, “Yeah, but, Pete!  Don’t you see?  He thinks the offerings and incense are an abomination!  He doesn’t desire those!  Just look at verse 13!!”

“Bring your worthless offerings no longer,
Incense is an abomination to Me.
New moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies—
I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly.

I say, “Why are they an abomination?  Scripture tells us!  Let’s read Proverbs 28:9!”

He who turns away his ear from listening to the torah,
Even his prayer is an abomination.

This is precisely the problem of Israel that Yahweh is addressing!  They were not giving ear to His instructions!

10 Hear (shama) the word of the Lord,
You rulers of Sodom;
Give ear to the torah of our God,
You people of Gomorrah…

16 “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight.
Cease to do evil,
17 Learn to do good;
Seek justice,
Reprove the ruthless,
[g]Defend the orphan,
Plead for the widow.

Farther, in verse 19, He says,

If you consent and obey,
You will eat the best of the land

All are clear pointers to Torah obedience!!

When Yahweh says,

“Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says Yahweh,
“Though your sins are as scarlet,
They will be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They will be like wool,

He is speaking to those who honestly believe they are doing the right thing, when in actuality, they are walking contrary to His revealed will, His Torah!  He is speaking to this generation, and to those in Christendom who believe they are doing the right thing abandoning parts of the Torah.  He is saying, ‘Come back to the ancient paths! (Jeremiah 6:16-19!!)

Brothers and sisters, I will make this abundantly clear:

If you are walking contrary to the Torah, you walk in apostasy!  Return!  Time is short and Judgment stands at the door!!

  • If you are eating pig, you will die! (Isaiah 66:16-17)
  • If you are profaning the Sabbath, you will die!  (Exodus 31:12-17)
  • If you are not celebrating the feasts, you will die (you will be in the wrong place at the wrong time)!  (Exodus 11:4-7)
  • If you are not walking according to the covenant (the will of the Father), you will be cast into outer darkness!  (Matthew 7:21-23)

Do you walk according to Scripture, or according to the traditions of men and their many finely crafted false doctrines?

You may have been ignorant of this truth a few minutes ago, but you are no longer ignorant.  You are now accountable to research and get understanding.  Do not delay!  Today is the day of salvation!

Do not be offended at me or my words.  This is the message of the Living God throughout Scripture!  His way is the everlasting covenant and the way to show Him love is obedience to His Torah!  Anything less is treason.snowing1sm

As the snow covers the brown and grey ground outside, so HE covers our sin when we turn in repentance, and ‘smite our thigh and are ashamed and humiliated!’

‘For after I turned back, I repented;
And after I was instructed, I smote on my thigh;
I was ashamed and also humiliated
Because I bore the reproach of my youth.’

Christendom, I pray the Father give you sleepless nights and relentless pursuit until you submit to His ways!  May He drive you to your knees in repentance and abject horror of the pagan ways you have inherited and promoted.  May He tear you that He may bind you!  May He teach you that His ways are right and the righteous walk in them.

    Tell it like it is now 🙂

  2. Connie E says:

    May His admonition move us all to His Truth and Obedience.

  3. Jack Jackson says:

    Isaiah 65 and 66 echo this same reasoning. It describes why their incense was not acceptable, because they offered it on and alter of bricks (65:3). These too ate swines flesh (v. 4) and broth of abominable things (seafood gumbo maybe, clam chowder?). They were obeying in His ways, they were doing things according to their own thoughts (v. 2).

    It reminds me of the last verse in Judges “In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes” Judges 21:25 Sounds like we are there again now. Nothing new under the sun.

    Look at how they had just been going through the motions in Is. 66:3 “He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dogs neck, he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine’s blood, he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations. Is. 66:3

    Notice the next verse about Him calling to them and them not listening (in delusions) which brings Is. 65 into perspective.

    • Pete Rambo says:

      Well… He’s calling again and sadly, many are not listening.

      I mentioned a little about Is. 66:16-17 and immediately thought, ‘I wonder if there is a larger chiastic structure in play here…’ You highlight that a little more with additional pieces from the 65-66 that match chapter 1… It would be a huge task to see if the whole book fits that model, but interesting.

      • Jack Jackson says:

        Again, nothing new under the sun!

        Last night I had an e-mail from the man that oversaw “our old home church” in CA with me. He was claiming the New Covenant for himself and the church, claiming “that God had written the covenant on his heart”. It was then I re-read Jer. 31 and suggested he look again to see what is actually supposed to be evidence of the “new covenant”. Yes, the evidence of the receiving of that new covenant is the evidence that YHVH has written his Torah upon your heart. If one does not have that evidence, such as those described in Romans 8 as carnally minded because they are at enmity with His Torah, are only leading to death.

      • Pete Rambo says:

        Yep… Further, the sign of the final fulfillment of the ‘new’ covenant is that ‘no more will a man teach his neighbor or his brother, ‘know the Lord’ because they all will…’ Since we are still teaching, the covenant is not complete in the earth or in us!!

        Here’s another thought: Who is the New Covenant with? Christendom would say, Jesus. Trouble with that is that there is NEVER an example in the Tanakh of a covenant being made with the sacrifice. It is always between God and man or two men (David/Jonathan). The sacrifice is a blood mediation… Therefore, the New Covenant cannot be with Yeshua, the mediating sacrifice, rather it is with Yehovah, and He does not/has not/will not change the terms. To do so is to deny Himself and place Himself under the penalty of a curse!

  4. ברוס says:

    Peter first thanks in the first part of your post for keeping the context/integrity of Isaiah without pushing your jesus agenda.

    But I have a question, since you see G-d never told us a covenant would be made with Messiah or with a certain human through sacrifice, how come your still promoting jesus as some type of relevant new covenant issuer?

    Lastly you left out many other things G-d has called us to turn away from …idolatry (see Deut 4) , lying, sexual immorality, immodest thoughts, greed, stingy etc..
