Sunday school series, P.21 Difficult Pauline verses, P.1

This week’s lesson was a shorter one, but there were several new people who joined our class.  All left excited and challenged to begin studying some of their traditions more deeply.

With only three lessons remaining in this series, we finally begin tackling some of Paul’s difficult verses.  I received an email this week from someone who said, “I’ve seen too much and fully understand and agree with a Hebraic perspective of Scripture, but my family keeps bringing up Colossians 2:16-17 and I am not sure how to answer.  so, this is where we begin with a few of Paul’s challenging verses.

And, I introduced a dynamite resource that every believer should have on their shelf…

Vultures and a Broken Cross

A few weeks ago, April 25th, 2015, to be exact, we were coming home from the Shabbat IMG_20150425_170133288_HDRservice at Issachar Oasis in Irmo, SC.  As we flashed past an old country church, I saw a sight that I had to turn around and take pics of.  On top of the church were about 25 buzzards or vultures.  This is a church that is still in regular use…

As we stopped to take several pics I noticed a tent in the adjacent graveyard for a funeral service that had very recently happened.  It all led to an eerie feeling.   Maybe even the ring of prophecy, but I resisted the temptation to post pics and just filed it away in the back of my mind.

Well, six weeks later, today, we are again traveling the same road on our way home from Shabbat and IMG_20150606_171954659_HDRI see something that takes my breath away, while hearing my son behind me gasp, “Whoa, whoa, whoa!!  Dad, did you see that?”

“Yes!!  Wow!!,” I exclaimed, as I hit the brakes and looked for a place to turn around for pictures.

We have not seen this building since the April 25th pics, yet here was the same church building with the cross broken off and dangling by a seeming thread.

Just, wow!!  suddenly, I hear the echo of my son’s voice saying, “Woe, woe, woe!!”

Very eerie.

Prophetic?  I don’t know, but seriously shocking.

The Mount of Olives in Scipture

While rereading part of Warren Bowles’ Christianity Reconsidered this morning, he makes the point on page 99 that the Mount of Olives was also called the Mount of Destruction due to the temples to idols and child sacrifice. (References in picture)

This is a pic of the mount taken from Yair David on our recent trip.  Amazing that we, through NT lenses, see the mount with reverence, yet surely, Yeshua was intimately familiar with the abominations committed thereon.  It demonstrates that in Him everything is redeemable.

Praise Yah!

Tzitzits in a snap?

Here’s a quick/fun post…  The other day I used tzitzits as a case study for how we can learn to keep commands and allow others to interpret commands for themselves within the lines Abba has given us.

snap-br-1-300x300A friend sent me a link for a website advertising “Tzitzit in a Snap.”  Neither he, nor I have any affiliation and I do not normally promote businesses, but I thought this interesting enough in the wake of our previous discussion that I decided to share it.

(Personally, I was drooling all over their attache case…   LOL!  Very 30’s Casablanca-esque…  I have no need of one, but it sure is purty.)

The tzitzits at left are a pretty classic example of one person’s interpretation that fits the spirit of the command, but might ruffle some feathers…  Do we learn to walk at peace and let people be obedient with ‘different colors’ while still ‘coloring within the lines,’ or do we demand that they fit our box?  What do you think of these?

Discuss.

Blessings, Pete

Har Bracha…

Here is a beautiful view from the Mt of Blessing into the valley Abraham saw from Elon Moreh when he was promised the Land.  Neat verse here that goes well with his vision and obedience.

Terrific newsletter from the Washburns (Pics, too!)

One of the neat special blessings of attending the First B’ney Yosef National Congress in Israel was that I heard of many opportunities to serve Israel and even met a few people who are serving in a big and regular way.

During one of our group discussions a long-bearded countryboy was sitting next to me and I instantly liked his forward demeanor and friendly attitude.  This guy, Tom Washburn, is a do-er…  But, humble, too!  Anyway, as we talked I found that he and his family have been in the Land on multiple occasions for various ministries of service and had many tips and much knowledge about how to be a blessing to Israel.  On this trip he had Tommy and Hannah, early 20-something, son and daughter along.

Well, a few days ago I received their newsletter email and I really wanted to share it with you guys as a way of further enlarging our vision for Israel, her people, how to serve and how to help those who serve…  Here is the complete email and some pictures included:

Shalom My Family,

Hannah, Tommy and I were sitting in the old city of Jerusalem this afternoon, (Thursday) finally enjoying our breakfast at about 3:00PM.  We finished eating … looked at each other Tommy and Hannah Old City… and I said “What shall we do?  This is the first time in one week that we have been able to take a deep breath and actually make a choice as to where we would go and what we would do.”  That sums up what our life has been like this past week.  That is why it has taken us so long to get some sort of an update out to you. No time at the beach … no time to go sight seeing … the Father has had other plans … and they have been good! Continue reading

Learning to color within the lines….

We were eating lunch in the ‘upper room’ overlooking the Temple Mount and the Kotel (Western Wall).  Technically, it was the meeting room over The Quarter Restaurant, but IMG_20150520_114531854‘upper room’ had a more interesting ring to it considering we were in the Old City of Jerusalem.  As we discussed a plethora of topics, particularly items of consideration before and during the First B’ney Yosef National Congress, Frank Houtz made a comment about the broad latitude within much of the Torah and the freedom we have to be different yet united.

Yesterday, a ‘third rail topic’ came up and it highlighted to me the imperative we have to learn the boundaries and then learn to walk in peace with those who may see things differently than we do.  Let me explain and give an example.

The Torah can generally be divided into to two colorscategories:  ‘DO!’ and ‘Don’t!’  These could be likened to the lines within which we are to color.

Many of these commands, particularly the ‘DO!’ commands, offer a lot of latitude in observance.  This latitude might be likened to the variety of colors that can be used within those lines.

Here is the Scriptural basis for a simplified case study:

37 The Lord also spoke to Moses, saying, 38 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue. 39 It shall be a tassel for you [a]to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, so as to do them and not [b]follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, 40 so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God. 41 I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am the Lord your God.”

This is a ‘DO’ command that Continue reading

Written in stone….

Maybe God engraved the Fourth Commandment into stone precisely because of man’s propensity to try to overwrite His instructions….

Happy Belated Aleph-Tav Teusday…

Because I was out of the country (in Israel) the last two weeks,  I have gotten behind on the regularly installments of  ‘Aleph-Tav Tuesday’.  Well, I just put eight new images in the A-T Images page.  Be sure to share the Aleph Tav story and some of these incredible images by MATS author, Bill Sanford.

Here is a teaser:

Video of Trip to Israel

Here is a short video overview of our recent trip to Israel and a taste of the First B’ney Yosef National Congress.  A few minutes of music and video can’t begin to encapsulate the incredible experience, but I pray this whet your taste buds to make the trip yourself!!

I will have a much fuller video of yesterday’s report to some supporters that gives details…  We had some audio video glitches, but I think we can salvage and assemble something that will be worth watching and sharing!

Go. to. Israel!  Hanoch Young of Kol Yehuda and Mike Clayton of Joined to Hashem will be leading a ‘Connect with the Land’ tour in the fall!  HIGHLY recommended.
