Defining ‘Righteousness’

Y’shua (Jesus) in Matthew 5:6 says,

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

And, just a couple verses later He says,

Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Have you ever really stopped to think, ‘What is righteousness?’  Or, ‘How does Scripture define righteousness?’

I read a sermon the other day by someone using the above two quoted verses, and he never quite got to the point or answered the question, Continue reading

Just Another False Prophet!!

Certainly, we are living in interesting times.  As a long-time student of prophecy, I know full-well the significance of many events occurring around the world and particularly in Israel.  Because of the many obviously endtime events, the number of dreams and visions has multiplied in the last couple years, seemingly exponentially.  From emails and youtube videos to fliers in the mailbox, etc.

The Bible speaks directly to this situation and tells us why we are to NOT listen to them because they are FALSE prophets. Big names.  Leaders of huge ‘ministries.’  False.

First, what is a prophet?  Well, that depends on whether you are speaking of the messengers of Yahweh or of the pagan Continue reading

NOW is the time!!

If you have wondered about the Biblical feasts…  you know, the ones Scripture calls the Feasts of the Lord, ‘MY appointed times….’ then, NOW is the time to act.

We are about 35 days away from Rosh Hashannah, 45 days away from Yom Kippur and 50 days away from the joyous WEEK of Sukkot, the Feast of Booths.  Each is special and is significant in the life of the believer.  These are time that Scripture clearly says are ‘Yahweh’s appointed times.’  ‘Perpetual statutes in all your dwelling places throughout your generations….’

He desires to meet with us, but not on our own terms or with our own invented holy days.  Rather, He has given us seven wonderful set apart festivals for our rest and spiritual fulfillment.  NOW is the time to begin planning and preparing for each. Continue reading

“Where there is no vision…”

You are probably familiar with the first half of this verse, but do you know what the rest of it says?

Where there is no vision, the people perish, but happy is he who keeps the Torah.

Proverbs 29:18

Happy?

Not my words…

Those who forsake the Torah praise the wicked,
But those who keep the Torah strive with them.  Prov. 28:9

Love = Loyalty. Do you LOVE Him?

Y’shua said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

Have you ever stopped to ponder what the word ‘love’ means in this context?

Currently, our fellowship (as well as all Messianic and/or Jewish fellowships the world over) is/are studying through the Book of Deuteronomy/Devarim. As part of that study in our fellowship, we spent some time going through the excellent teaching by Rico Cortes titled, YHWH our Suzerain and pondering the fact that this renewing of the covenant with the second generation prior to their entry into the land is structured exactly as ancient Near East treaties. Further, the terms used set the definition for many concepts throughout Scripture.

Essentially, a failure to understand the Book of Deuteronomy leads to a failure to understand many concepts and definitions in the rest of Scripture. The statement by Y’shua, ‘If you love Me, you will keep My commandments’ is a classic example.

We will seek to define the word ‘love’ as it is used in this statement, Continue reading

Protestant Hypocrisy?

A friend sent me a copy of an article from the late 1890s.  While it is very interesting and telling, a citation from the Encyclopedia Britannica (doesn’t say which edition, but I guess circa early 1890s) really shakes up the ‘sola scriptura’ idea…  But, this blog has said this before.

Here is a portion of the article:

Inconsistency of Reformers.

Thus the reformed churches, while professing to reject tradition for the pure Word of God, were led to deny their own position, by accepting Sunday on the authority of tradition only, and tradition directly opposed to the divine Word. It was the weakness caused by thus practically denying their own position that more than any other one thing arrested the progress of the Reformation. Draper says: “Toward the close of Luther’s life it seemed as if there was no other prospect for papal power than total ruin; yet at this day out of three hundred millions of Christians more than half owe allegiance to Rome. Almost as if by enchantment the Reformation suddenly ceased to advance. Rome was not only able to check its spread, but even to gain back a portion Continue reading

Every word!!

Most of us know that when Yeshua/Jesus was tempted of the adversary after fasting for 40 days, the Messiah’s response was Scripture.  But do we notice every quote is from Deuteronomy?  The Covenant?

Check it out: Deuteronomy 8:3; 6:16; 6:13 and 10:20.

So, while pondering that recently, another thought occurred to me.

He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you  understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the LordDeut. 8:3

‘Man lives by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of Yahweh!’

Churchianity constantly pits Paul against Moses, Jesus against God, Law against Gra Continue reading

Christmas in July?

Way back in the ‘dark ages’…  Like, about 1987, I spent a summer as a camp counselor.  It was there, during one of the weeks of camp, that I was introduced to the idea of ‘Christmas in July.’  I guess it was a fun activity in the middle of summer…  certainly, thinking of colder weather and such was pleasant at a time when the heat and humidity south of Atlanta were stifling.

The phrase again struck me the other day and I thought, ‘why not?’  Good time to offer a few thoughts.

Tradition is always a volatile mix to discuss, and I rarely shy away from it, but heavy thought and discussion is most practical when we are less emotionally or financially invested.  Because July is almost as far from Christmas as we can get, maybe now is a good time to consider the subject. Continue reading

“I am the Life” means…

Previously, I began a short series exploring what Yeshua/Jesus meant when He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life…”  We have explored ‘the way‘ as well as ‘the truth,’ now we will look at ‘the life’ as well as ‘no one comes to the Father except by Me.’

In each of the previous studies, we found that Scripture unabashedly equates Torah with ‘the way’ and ‘truth.’  We also found that Yeshua, being the ‘living Word’ or ‘Word made flesh’ is the embodiment of Torah, the perfect revelation of and the One who perfectly walks/reveals Torah.

We’ll not rehash what we have already learned, instead Continue reading
