Jesus/Yeshua said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” In a previous post, we explored at least part of what He meant when He said, “I am the way.”
In this post, we will explore a bit about what He meant when He said, “I am the truth.”
“I am the truth…” From John 14:6.
Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
7 If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.”
8 Philip *said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus *said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.
In the previous post we considered that Yeshua/Jesus is the Living Word.
John 1:1-4 says,
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
In Him was life and the life was the Light of men.
(Hmmm… that reminds me, we need to consider the ‘life’ and ‘light’ motiffs as well as ‘bread,’ ‘shepherd,’ etc…)
So, Yeshua, the One who is the truth is also the Word made flesh… Let’s cut right to the chase and see what Scripture has to say about truth!
Psalm 119:142 says,
Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your TORAH is truth.
Interesting. Yeshua is the Truth. Torah is Truth! Yeshua is the Living Word…
We are going to come back and address this particular thought in a little more detail, but let’s see a few more verses that talk about ‘truth.’
“True instruction was in his mouth and unrighteousness was not found on his lips; he walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many back from iniquity. For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and men should seek instruction from his mouth; for he is the messenger of Yahweh Tzevaot. But as for you, you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by the instruction; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, ” says Yahweh Tzevaot.
This is a very interesting passage of Scripture. While on the surface it is speaking of Levi, the imagery is in fact of Yeshua. Levi, being a type and shadow, reveals a better High Priest, Yeshua. The ‘true instruction’ in Levi’s mouth is Torah. This passage and the larger context of Malachi reveals that as long as the priests taught Torah, they were doing the will of the Father. When they strayed and ‘turned aside from the way’ by corrupting the Torah (covenant of Levi), they caused men to ‘stumble.’
WOW!! You catch the richness here? Torah is ‘true instruction.’ It is ‘the way‘ to ‘walking in uprightness’ and ‘ turning many back from iniquity.’ Further, it is the message that will be in the priest’s mouth when he is walking with Yahweh in peace and is His ‘messenger.’
Torah is ‘true instruction.’ Yeshua perfectly fulfills this passage!! More on this in a minute.
Rav Sh’aul, the Apostle Paul says, in Romans 2:20 that,
“the Law (Torah) [is] the embodiment of knowledge and of truth.”
Simply, Torah is truth!!
“O send out Your light and Your truth, let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your dwelling places.
What is the psalmist talking about besides the Torah? What else will lead him to the holy hill and to Yahweh’s dwelling places? He knows NO OTHER TRUTH besides Torah!! Yeshua is but a future hope, yet it is this Messiah that says, “I AM the truth!!”
In John 8:31-32, Yeshua says to Jews who had believed in Him;
“If you continue in My word, you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
What exactly was His word? In John 7:16 He says,
“My doctrine is not Mine but His that sent Me.”
Simply, ‘My word’ in John 8:31 is ‘My doctrine’ in John 7:16 and that was directly from the Father.
In fact, we were told directly by Moses that this would be so!! Yahweh tells Moses in Deuteronomy 18:18,
“I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and I will put My words in His mouth; and He shall speak unto them all that I shall command Him.
Yeshua’s doctrine is the same doctrine/word of the Father…
To go a step further, Yeshua said, ‘I and the Father are one…’
“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Here is one final Scripture that we can share: James 4:12.
There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?
Hmmm… Now, there is an interesting twist we will not explore right now!! Yeshua is/was the Lawgiver!?! (If you want to explore this further, go here.)
There are many more ‘proofs,’ but this helps break several paradigms…
– Yeshua did not come to ‘do away with the Torah!’
– Yeshua IS the Living Word and thus the living, perfect Teacher and representation of the Torah and therefore could not teach a new or different law.
A few verses from I John, the author who recorded Messiah saying, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”
If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. (I John 1:6-7)
By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 5 but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: 6 the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
7 Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. (I John 2:3-7)
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. (I John 5:2-3)
I pray this little study has opened some doors and given you some material to ponder in your search for the TRUTH. The ‘Truth’ is a Person and a Way to walk.
