I found a couple of things in this portion interesting. First, Sh’mot 21:7-9. I think it is beautiful that the redemption of the world was written into Law at the foundation of the world. I’m not sure of the chapter and verse, (I think its in Yirmeyahu) but YHVH divorces the house of Israel due to transgressions. In his never-ending mercy, he has already laid out the plan for her to marry his Son and be redeemed. Just beautiful.

Secondly, Sh’mot 23:13. This is a hard one in the world we live in. The names of other gods cross our lips daily…from the days of the week and months of the year, to the names of cities and holidays widely celebrated. We are to be in the world, but not OF the world. It’s easy enough to make this the norm in our own household, but how do we do this while out in the world? “If you love me, keep my commandments.” But it’s not just the “effort” of keeping the commandment because we can ask forgiveness later. We are accountable because we know better. So…any suggestions? What ideas do you have?

Agree with the first comment and want to ponder that a little more as it relates to this passage of redemption. We did see a couple weeks ago in Sh’mot 13 the redemption of firstborn males and how that relates to Yeshua as the perfect sacrifice who redeems each of us as firstborns.

The second observation indeed is a challenge in this culture. May need its own post some time in the future. Certainly, Yahweh is clear that we are not to take on the culture and habits of the nations and holidays as well as expressions, names of days, months etc all touch on this. ‘Coming out of Babylon’ is part of this walk of obedience.

Few realize how great this task when our whole culture is steeped in paganism. Any wonder why the House of Judah has historically lived very separate and isolated lives from the communities they lived in? How else do you live without saying, “SUNday, Moon day (or mons day), Wodens day. Thor’s day, Saturn day,” etc…? Same with Ishtar (Easter), etc. (I say them here to be abuntantly clear to any who may not be entirely familiar with the origins of the names…)

Interestingly, as best I can tell, the ancient Hebrew culture did not have names for the days of the week. Only one day had a name and everything else revolved around that day. Appropriately. I think all other days were refered to based on their relation to Shabbat. ‘The day after Shabbat’, ‘three days before Shabbat’, ‘the day before Shabbat’. Now the mindset is correct from the beginning. Everything revolves around the Shabbat!

Much to ponder here. Looking forward to other input.

      Shalom!

I listened to Kimberly Rogers teaching on this portion from 2011. I really love her stuff. Good, deep sod teaching that digs. Generally, I try not to hear others until I’ve had a chance to do some of my own digging, but I almost always try to hear her perspective.

Good teaching in this one that will bless you and again reveal Messiah in a fresh new way from Torah!

The audio link doesn’t work, but the Youtube video series does. Well worth the listen!
