The Godly Legacy of Passover, Part I.

I had planned to put together a post or two defending the Christian observance of Passover as not only Biblical, but the practice of the Apostles and First Century Body of believers in Yeshua, both Jew and Gentile.  Time has been the challenge.

Here, in a two part series, Al McCarn of The Barking Fox does an excellent job presenting and defending in a fairly short couple posts.  I’ll get to Paul’s practice in the next day or so.  He is clearly recorded as participating in the Feasts of the Lord in multiple places in the Book of Acts as well as elsewhere…

Simply, it is time for all who believe in the Law of the Lord and who believe in the Atoning death of Meshichenu (our Messiah) to be preparing for Pesach.

    Hi Pete. Appreciate your blogs. Just have a couple of comments – not to argue calendar, but to clarify something. The 14th of Nisan is “Pesach” – it is NOT a feast day for us. WE only get to Remember what happened both in Egypt and at Calvary – so, yes we keep what turns out to be the Beginning of the 15th of Nisan and we call it Pesach – but by that time the Death Angel has passed over us (HalleluYAH!), the Passover Lamb has been slain, His righteous blood spread on the doorposts of our hearts, so we enter into the 15th day of Nisan (or Aviv) and have a celebratory meal. Typically, the next day (still the 15th) we have a “High Day” service to initiate the Days of Unleavened Bread. Then we continue to keep the Days of Unleavened Bread for 7 days. On the day after the Shabbat during the Days of Unleavened Bread, is the Wave Sheaf offering – representing the Risen Y’Shua – presented to The Father as the First Born. And we also have a service on the 7ths of the Days of Unleavened Bread. Interestingly, this year the Gregorian calendar date numbers coincide with the Hillel calendar…

      How would you understand Exodus 12:14 that calls it a ‘permanent ordinance throughout your generations?’ Or, Exodus 12:24 that says ‘you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever?’ Or, Ex. 12:42…. Or multiple times in Leviticus where we are told the Feasts of the Lord are ‘perpetual statutes in all your dwellings throughout your generations?’

      I understand that Yeshua is the Paschal lamb, but like an anniversary, do we not celebrate as a memorial that looks back?

      I see nowhere in Scripture that Yahweh declares an end to the ordinance. In fact, I see just the opposite: Malachi 4:4-5!! The Apostle Paul kept it (acts 20:6) and exhorted the Corinthians to do the same with the right heart attitude (I Cor. 5:7-8).

      Another thought is, Jeremiah 16:14-15 (see larger context to see this is written to a future/present generation) prophesies a future exodus with the clear implication tying it to Passover…. If we are not practicing God’s dress rehearsals, will we be ready when that time comes? Or, will we be walking in disobedience and reap the consequences. Doesn’t mean lose of salvation, but may mean some serious hardship in this life….

      So, I would have to disagree and say that I do believe it is for every member of the commonwealth of Israel. It is written in our Constitution (Torah) and so we need to prayerfully seek the king on this matter and walk before Him in obedience, even if we do not fully understand.

    Perhaps what Sharon is stating, is that “we” [meaning her congregation] do not keep Passover [the 14th day celebration at night], but only the celebration at the “Beginning of the 15th of Nisan and we call it Pesach.”

    This tradition and practice of not celebrating the Torah-required Pesach on the 14th, but celebrating only the 7-day Feast of Unleavened starting the 15th and ‘calling that Pesach,’ was around in Yahushua’s day (Luke 22:1), and is a popular tradition even today.

    This tradition disappears, when an individual or Congregation recognises Messiah Yahushua as the Passover Lamb, and upon taking of His Body and His Blood at the Passover meal, just as Messiah did on the night of the 14th.

    Recognition of Messiah as the Passover Lamb includes believing His Words regarding His keeping of the Passover with His Disciples.

    This is a vivid illustration that today there is still a great disparity between what the Torah [and the New Testament writings]actually say, and what is commonly practiced in the congregations of both Ephraim and Judah.

    Torah tells us Passover and Unleavened are two separate feasts, each having its own timing, and each having its own specified sacrifice and memorial, and each having its own prophetic meaning. As followers of Messiah, we are called to keep both feasts!

    According to Torah, both Passover and Unleavened are called a Feast or ‘appointed time’ [moed], and a ‘Sacrificial Feast’ [chag], and a ‘Convocation or gathering’ [miqra or assembly].

    Here are the Scripture passages, as seen in the Passover series, The New Covenant Passover: A Mystery:

    Passover and Feast of Unleavened: Similarities
    * Passover: A Feast or ‘appointed time’ [moed] (Lev 23:4-6)
    * Unleavened: A Feast or ‘appointed time’ [moed] (Lev 23:4-6)

    * Passover: A ‘Sacrificial Feast’ [chag] (Exodus 12:14a; 34:25)
    * Unleavened: A ‘Sacrificial Feast’ [chag] (Exodus 34:18; 23:6)

    * Passover: A ‘Convocation or gathering’ [miqra or assembly] (Lev 23:4-6)
    * Unleavened: A ‘Convocation or gathering’ [miqra or assembly] (Lev 23:4-6)
    Both Judah and Ephraim are now undergoing the promised Restoration of all things. The restoring of the true Passover in place of tradition, is high on the list of those things being restored.

    As part of this Restoration, both Judah and Ephraim are coming out from their respective bondages, their man-made traditions and practices. They are returning to Father, through Messiah.

    There are remnants of both Judah and Ephraim who will be among those who return. But to be among the returnees, one must focus on obedience to Messiah and His Word, in order to come out of the bondage of past traditions, to be among the returnees.

    This disparity should also illustrate for us that the ‘gold standard’ is not the syncretistic practices and traditions found within both Ephraim churchianity and Judah.

    Instead, we must rely only on the unleavened teaching of Messiah and His Word — the Torah, the Writings, the Prophets, and the Testimony of Yahushua!

      Good points.

      I was unclear on exactly what was meant, but wanted to be sure that we understand Passover is a perpetual statute.

      I considered as well that maybe there was a misunderstanding on the present use of a lamb (where I do know some who apply that portion of the ordinance, though I understand it to be only offered at the temple in Jerusalem by the priests… Lev. 17). In the end, I do not think any of us will get it perfectly right and need grace for ourselves until Messiah can teach us rightly. Likewise, we need to encourage each other to ‘keep the feast,’ but have grace when our understandings differ as the Ruach leads us in truth!

      Key to it all is to pray, seek and walk as best we can in faith while He sorts it out!!
