Abstract:
The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) has long been misinterpreted within Christian theology as a depiction of the afterlife and a condemnation of the Jewish people. Traditional Christian doctrine views the rich man as representative of all Jews, cast into eternal torment, while Lazarus is seen as a symbol of Gentiles, embraced by Abraham. However, a deeper examination of historical priestly disputes, Second Temple politics, and prophetic patterns in Scripture reveals that this parable is not about individual salvation or an afterlife doctrine, but rather a prophetic allegory of the battle between the legitimate and illegitimate priesthoods of Israel.
