Yesterday’s post about the place of a single woman in kol Israel sparked some spirited conversation in several places, but it was my early morning Telegram message this morning that made my brain explode!! Let me explain.
The Telegram was from Jeremy, sojourning brother and occasional author on this blog. It said,
My brain went into overdrive. “How?” We have discussed that and related passages ad nauseum. Surely we’ve not just gotten the meat off the bone, but also sucked out the marrow. “What did we miss?”
By way of background, we have really, really dug deeply into headship and patriarchy. We’ve covered the relationship of Messiah:Assembly = man:woman. A whole book that demonstrated that Paul’s teaching on man:woman relationships originates in Torah and IS God’s authority structure has come out of those and related discussions.
I quickly dialed the phone as my curiosity was piqued.
After a few morning niceties, he says, “You remember all those discussions we’ve had about how a man can save or condemn his house?”
My head spun through Achan, Korach, Abraham, the Jailer, etc. Over and over in Scripture we see that the man, as head of the house, has a direct role in the blessings or curses on that house. Further, there seems, throughout Scripture, to be a direct relationship between the man’s relationship with Yah and the wellbeing of the family. But, we puzzled, how significant is it?
I said, “I don’t have my Bible in front of me. What does the verse say?”
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.Ephesians 5:23 (See 5:22-33 for full context)
Without him explaining anything, I said, “There it is! You just blew my mind!” I was stunned!!
I was thinking:
|husband is head of…||wife|
|Messiah is head of…||Assembly|
|Messiah is Savior of…||the Assembly|
|The implied connection is:|
|husband is savior (redeemer?) of…||wife|
This exactly parallels other examples seen throughout Scripture and things Paul says!!
An excited exchange began that boiled over into a Torah observant men’s chat that we both participate in.
Man, as a bondservant, is in submission to Messiah. But, though he is a bondservant, he has a leadership role for his own family that parallels, or images the Messiah to his family and to the world.
Later in the day, this passage came to mind:
11 A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 But women will be saved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.I Timothy 2:11-15
When I brought it up to the group, Yeshayahu, the man behind the camera in most of my videos last summer, said in part,
“…a man is at least a critical element in a woman finding favor with Yah!”
I couldn’t agree more, and the I Timothy 2 passage seems to connect a larger theme Paul has in his teachings.
It seems that by coming under the headship/authority of a man and walking in submission to him, a woman is intentionally rolling back the sin of Eve and willfully battling the first rebellion! She is clinging and submitting to the authority placed over her in the same way the man is to cling to and submit to the Messiah! This is a mindbendingly beautiful picture and parallel! No wonder the adversary HATES headship and patriarchy!
A clear example in Scripture is Isaiah 4:1 where the antidote for Isaiah 3 is for women to place themselves under the authority of a man so that their reproach/rebellion might be removed!
There is much more to this and I need to process more to really understand the depths of this insight, but it seems the ‘why’ a woman needs a covering is because it is directly connected to her sanctification and redemption in some very important way. It is a rejection of rebellion against Yah and an embracing of Him, His ways, and the authority structure HE has for HIS people.
My mind is still spinning. I can’t wait to see the comments or see your emails!
