Jubilee, Yom Kippur and Isaiah 61

This week’s Torah Portion, Behar (‘on the Mount’), is primarily about the seventh year Sabbaths and the year of Jubilee.  Leviticus 25 gives us many details of this joyous event of freedom that was commanded to occur every

50 years in Israel’s calendar.  On this date that began a Sabbatical year, slaves received freedom, debts were cancelled and land was returned to families who might have lost it during difficult circumstances.  What joy!

In our Torah study today at Davar Chaim, I pondered aloud the juxtaposition of this first day of Jubilees occurring on Yom Kippur, traditionally a day of mourning, of ashes, and of weakness induced by fasting.  Here is the verse,

‘You are also to count off seven sabbaths of years for yourself, seven times seven years, so that you have the time of the seven sabbaths of years, namely, forty-nine years. You shall then sound a ram’s horn abroad on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the day of atonement you shall sound a horn all through your land. 10 You shall thus consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim [a]a release through the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, [b]and each of you shall return to his own property, [c]and each of you shall return to his family.

How odd…  On the Day of Atonement.

As we proceeded with our study, we read the first half of Isaiah 61 because Yeshua used the first verse at the  beginning of His ministry.  He said,

The Spirit of the Lord [a]God is upon me,
Because the Lord has anointed me
To bring good news to the [b]afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to captives
And [c]freedom to prisoners;
To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord

Interestingly, He stopped mid-phrase, and did not continue with,

And the day of vengeance of our God;

In Christendom, I was raised to believe that He was only partly fulfilling the passage with the future Day of Vengeance, not altogether untrue, but that explanation shifts focus from something else…  As we read and pondered Isaiah 61, in light of the previous verses I cited, something hit me!  Look at the next couple verses in Isaiah:

To comfort all who mourn,
To grant those who mourn in Zion,
Giving them a garland instead of ashes,
The oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.
So they will be called [d]oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

WOW!!  Those words all connect the previous reference from Jubilees to Yom Kippur!!  On THE Yom Kippur of all ages, the King of Kings will declare Jubilee for His people and vengeance on His enemies!  Imagine the great joy of His people!!  Debts released.  Land returned.  Slaves released!!

The very next couple verses point to the restoration of the Tent of David, as seen in Amos 9 and Acts 15!!

Then they will rebuild the ancient ruins,
They will raise up the former devastations;
And they will repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks,
And [e]foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers.
But you will be called the priests of the Lord;
You will be spoken of as ministers of our God.
You will eat the wealth of nations,
And in their [f]riches you will boast.

Is there another witness that helps confirm this most joyful Day of Atonement??

After our study today, this passage came to mind:

[a]For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff; and the day that is coming will set them ablaze,” says the Lord of hosts, “so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.” “But for you who [b]fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall. You will tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day [c]which I am preparing,” says the Lord of hosts.

[d]Remember the law of Moses My servant, even the statutes and ordinances which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel.

“Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. He will [e]restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a [f]curse.”

The Day of the Lord, the Day of Vengeance, that day, the great and terrible day of the Lord, all monikers for the same day of Judgment, but also, THE day of great joy!!

Yeshua returns to the sound of the shofar, on Jubilees, at the Day of Atonement.  Now the big question is, what year is the year of Jubilees?  One gentleman today mused, ‘We are told we don’t know the day or hour, but it doesn’t say, we won’t know the year.’

Hmmmm….  Interesting!

A final note:  I have long thought that Yom Teruah, the Day of Blowing, was the day of His return, but now I have some thinking to do…  How does that day fit into the sequence of eschatology if His return is at Yom Kippur?

Would love to hear some thoughts on these verses and how they all go together, or others that connect!!

Shavua tov!

  1. It’s getting late here and I don’t have any deep thoughts at the moment. Just wanted to note two of my most favorite Messianic songs are about Isaiah 61/Luke 4:

    This is good! When all looks really bad in the world, its really good, for those who love Yahweh and following the Lamb. Since Sep 11th we have seen many, many changes in our land and the world in general. All appear to be pointing to this day of rejoicing for Yahweh’s children.

  3. Oh my gosh! This is amazing. I had merely skimmed through the day of jubilee because I prayed and studied and couldn’t really understand the whole jubilee thing. I’m going to repost this article on my Facebook. Awesome! What I could not understand (looking at this last torah portion) was that Shavuot was on June 3rd this year. I said what in the world? Then I found an article that said that rabbis mixed it up a bit after the temple was destroyed. Before that they celebrated it on Sunday. ( the weekly Sabbath after the Passover during unleavened bread. )Otherwise the Jewish people did not have a accurate Biblical time for when Judaism was born. The day when Adonai gave them the Torah. Its an article on my FB page where I will post yours. Excellent article my friend!!!!!

  6. Mark says:

    BASIS FOR TIMING OF THE LAST WEEK (SEVEN YEARS ACTUALLY SHORTENED TO SIX YEARS, SIX MONTHS, AND NINE DAYS)

    The timing of the last week, which will close out the past six thousand years (120 Jubilees) of history of mankind, is based upon the belief in the Jubilee solves the timing issues found in book of Daniel and including book of Revelation. This belief is founded on the premise, in which the Jubilee is counted as a Sabbath year. This means there are eight (8) Sabbath years every fifty (50) years and the number of years required to attain seventy (70) Sabbath years is four hundred and forty-two years (442) not four hundred and ninety years (490). The counting of only one Sabbath year once every seven years does not account for the Jubilee Sabbath year.
    Jesus fired a direct shot at the last week when he stood up and declared a favorable year of the LORD in the reading from Isaiah 61. This declaration of a favorable year of the LORD would have been the eightieth Jubilee with only forty (40) more left to fulfill the one hundred and twenty (120) Jubilees, which may be seen in two types in life of Moses and three divisions of Psalms by the eight in fifty rule, as in feast of weeks and Jubilee. By firing a direct shot at last week, I mean, that if one were to know when Jesus stood up in Nazareth and add forty (40) Jubilees (2000 years – 40 times 50 years) to the date, he would get the date of when Jesus will return at the last Jubilee on the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur.
    Furthermore, the last seven years may be mapped out by using the keys in which Jesus fulfilled the first fruits feasts called Passover, Unleavened Bread, and First Fruits by his death and resurrection and by his birth on Day of Atonement fulfilled the goat led out to the wilderness as offering to Azazel (scapegoat). The feast of weeks was fulfilled by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit on the one hundred and twenty (which you can relate to 120 Jubilees) persons in the upper room. All the timing revelations in book of Daniel and Revelation shall be tied to a memorial or feast of the LORD.
    The date of when Jesus stood up in Nazareth may be derived by from belief of decree by Artaxerxes to Nehemiah to have occurred on first day of Nissan in four hundred and forty-five B.C and seven weeks and sixty-two weeks equates to four hundred and forty years, six months, and nine days. This derives in the birth of the Messiah as promised by Gabriel to Daniel on the Day of Atonement in 5 B.C (which is probably Sept 11th or 12th). By the gospels we know that Jesus was around thirty years of age when he started his ministry, which from the above date would arrive at 26 A.D. at the miracle recorded in John of turning water to wine. From the gospel of John we follow Jesus’s ministry through the first Passover in 27 A.D. to the encounter of the woman at Jacob’s well in Shiloh (first resting spot of the Ark of Covenant). Then we progress on to the reading of Isaiah 61 by Jesus in Nazareth. Jesus in reading this scripture (Luke 4:18) tells the people of Nazareth, his hometown, he is the Messiah and this scripture is fulfilled. Jesus tells us this is the Day of Atonement the start of a favorable year of the LORD, a Jubilee. Read Leviticus 25:1-55 and compare. This is the eightieth Jubilee from creation with forty left until the last Jubilee, the one hundred and twentieth. This reading occurred on Yom Kippur in 27AD.
    Thus adding 2000 years for forty Jubilees (40 times 50 is 2000) to 27 AD you arrive at Day of Atonement in 2027 AD as the final or last Jubilee, which by moon phases should be Sept 9, 2027.
    This above statement is also how the authors of The Jubilee Hypothesis determine their date also. This book was copyrighted on 2006 by Burke and Glenna Magee.
    Several other proofs of Jesus declaring a Jubilee are found in following two books The Favorable Year of the Lord: A Study of Jubilary Theology in the Gospel of Luke by Robert B. Sloan (now Dr. Robert Sloan, president of Houston Baptist University) and Jesus, Liberation, and the Biblical Jubilee by Sharon H. Ringe (professor of New Testatment at Wesley Theological Seminiary Washington, D.C.

  7. Mark Svoboda says:

    Jesus came at the appointed time to declare the acceptable year of the Lord on Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) in 27 AD. This year was 3999 in creation, as the Jubilee was always announced on Yom Kippur in 49th year of the 50 year cycle.
    This is also seen in life of Moses of 40, 80, and 120.
    Moses delivered Israel from bondage at 80 years of age means Jesus came at 80th Jubilee (4000 year from creation, which started in 3999th year) to deliver us from bondage of sin. He will come at 120th Jubilee to lead us to promised land ( Kingdom of God)6000th year from creation, which starts in the 49th year of 120th Jubilee 5999 or 2027 AD.
    On Yom Kippur 2027 AD
    September 9th, 2027.
